Hartland Art Print

A gorgeous art print which features the beauty that is Hartland Quay, a place you simply must visit.

Hartland Quay dates back to 1586 when it was commissioned by a parliamentary bill, which in turn was sponsored by the likes of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh. It became a busy port with ships transporting coal, granite and farm produce. However, by the end of the 19th Century this was no longer the case, the pier began to be destroyed by storms and because of the introduction of the railway, work maintaining the pier was halted. The pier is no longer there today but alas, Hartland Quay is well worth a visit. It is one of my very favourite places in North Devon. The views of the coastline are quite literally breathtaking when you view them for the first time.

The buildings in the print include Hartland Quay Hotel and the Wreckers Retreat Bar. Back in the day, the buildings would have been a malthouse, stables and workers cottages. If only we were able to transport ourselves back on time for just a second, to experience the hustle and bustle but to be honest, with a little imagination, it’s not hard to imagine the smugglers that may have walked in your footsteps, the conversations that may have been had and the sight of the tall ships arriving into port.
